A majestic marble statue of Apollo Sauroktonos from Attica's ancient soil stands tall, crafted in the Hellenistic era around 100 B.C. Measuring 0.94 meters high, 0.42 meters wide, and 0.26 meters deep, this masterpiece weighs approximately 139 kilograms. A remarkable piece bequeathed to the museum by Charles Haslewood Shannon in 1937, its rich history is well-documented. In "All for Art; the Ricketts and Shannon collection," edited by J. Darracott, we find a detailed account of this treasure. Additionally, in Ludwig Budde's and Richard V. Nicholls' catalog of Greek and Roman sculpture at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Apollo Sauroktonos is listed as number 51, with a corresponding illustration on plate 15.
