Archaic figures unearthed in Athens and other sites were largely unknown when this kouroi was discovered. Art historians at that time were unclear about who or what these early Greek young male sculptures represented, so they named them all Apollo. Kouroi found in temple sanctuaries may represent a god, symbolize the act of dedication to the gods, or depict the person making an offering. Those discovered in burial grounds like this one, however, likely portray not a god but the deceased individual. The Tenea kouros stands out as it's carved from marble, whereas most Greek stone sculptures were crafted from limestone during that period.
