CSM acted like a space mothership carrying crew of three astronauts plus second module called Lunar module to lunar orbit and back to Earth after the journey is done. Two essential components made up the Command Service Module, with cone-shaped command cabin at its center holding astronaut team and all vital items needed for successful return into Earth's atmosphere.
