Apollo Citharist

Apollo, Greek god of the sun, sits proudly atop a rock, lyre in hand. Originally crafted with bronze, the statue's exposed skin and lyre were later replaced by Italian sculptor C. Albacini with gleaming white marble during a meticulous restoration process. Period engravings reveal that the statue once depicted a female figure, embodying the personification of Rome, before its features were altered during the restoration. The luxurious porphyry material suggests that this magnificent work was intended for a grand temple or an opulent private residence of the emperor.
