Apollo and Hyacinthus
myminifactory
This group, commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici, was masterfully crafted in subpar marble sourced directly from Baccio Bandinelli, who sought to tarnish his rival's reputation through malicious intent. The work, still bearing the marks of its incomplete state, remained untouched within Cellini's workshop until after his passing, at which point it was seized and incorporated into the estate of Francesco I de' Medici. The two youths are vividly portrayed in a moment just prior to their fateful clash. Apollo clutches the discus that will soon deliver the fatal blow to his beloved Hyacinthus: the god's spilled blood has given rise to a vibrant flower, the hyacinth.
