Apollo 11 Command Module The Smithsonian Museum has been digitizing and publishing some of their exhibit pieces. These are high-quality laser scans available at https://3d.si.edu/. They produced a full scan of the actual Apollo 11 Command Module on display, including both interior and exterior views. You can access the exterior model here: https://3d.si.edu/apollo11cm_media/boxes/play-cm-2016-09-26/cm-exterior.html. The entry in the Smithsonian item database is http://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=record_ID:nasm_A19700102000. A video about the digitization process can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyiy2fiV_Mc. This model is exquisite in its detail, and I had to download and print it myself. Here's what you'll find: -- Two different scales provided by the Smithsonian (1/20 and 1/40) -- The models are tilted about 2 degrees off of perpendicular, so I tipped the 1/40 model -- As a novice printer, I encountered trouble printing without supports messing up the detail at the top or marring the heat shield. I used Meshmixer to slice it into a cone section and heat shield section, which can be printed with no supports. -- I've included pictures of my various attempts at 50% of the 1/40 (1/80) model. I hope better-skilled printers will post better versions. I'll post more once my skills improve. Any advice is welcome. My tests were printed: -- 50% scale of the 1/40 model -- .1mm layer height -- No infill -- XYZ Printer White PLA -- On the split version, I added a 10mm brim to prevent warping Enjoy!
