In my personal opinion, I've devised a damper system for the Spyder 500 quadcopter by Gyrobot, which can be viewed here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:160607. The upper tray of this system includes holes designed to mount an APM board without any case. I opted for gimbal dampers from RCTimer (http://www.rctimer.com/product_978.html) to enhance the performance, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did creating it!
