This iconic statue is a replica of the Aphrodite masterpiece crafted by Kallimachos at the end of the fifth century BC. The original prototype was revived during the Roman era and skillfully adapted to represent the Venus Genetrix in the Forum of Caesar. Situated atop the Esqueline Hill, this magnificent sculpture showcases the Roman goddess Venus in her role as the revered mother, Genetrix. As honored by the powerful Julio-Claudian dynasty of Rome, who followed Julius Caesar's precedent in claiming her as their ancestral figurehead, a distinctively Roman title is bestowed upon an iconological type of Aphrodite that originated among the ancient Greeks. On the eve of the pivotal battle of Pharsalus (48 BC), Julius Caesar pledged to construct a temple at Rome in honor of Venus, his supposed ancestor. To fulfill this vow, he erected a stunning temple of Venus Genetrix within the newly constructed forum. Historical accounts pinpoint the cult statue in the temple as the work of a renowned Greek sculptor, Arkesilaos.
