Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess linked with love, beauty, pleasure, passion, and procreation, is associated with Venus from Roman mythology. Her symbols consist of myrtles, roses, doves, sparrows, and swans. Aphrodite's cult has roots in Phoenician goddess Astarte, East Semitic Ishtar, and Sumerian Inanna. Major worship sites include Cythera, Cyprus, Corinth, and Athens, with the Aphrodisia festival annually celebrated at midsummer. In Laconia, she was viewed as a warrior goddess. As the patron of prostitutes, Aphrodite has been associated with sacred prostitution; however, this idea is now considered inaccurate. According to Hesiod's Theogony, Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam created by Uranus's severed genitals, while Homer's Iliad depicts her as Zeus and Dione's daughter. Plato posits two distinct entities: Aphrodite Ourania (transcendent) and Aphrodite Pandemos (common to all people). Aphrodite is also referred to as Cytherea, Lady of Cythera, and Cypris, Lady of Cyprus, due to both locations' claims as her birthplace.
