Aphrodite (Capuan)

The Venus of Capua is a statuary form embodying a semi-naked Aphrodite. Its prototype, discovered in the ruins of an ancient theater in Capua, Italy, now resides at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli (Naples National Archaeological Museum). A preceding model of this type, similar to the Venus de Milo and near the Venus of Arles, likely depicted the goddess examining her reflection within the reflective inner surface of Ares' shield, a motif recognized on coins from Corinth.
