As part of the massive restoration effort, the old cast-iron fountain was ripped out during World War II, along with the rusty iron railings that had defined the Upper Terrace boundary. The replacement of the ancient cast-iron fountain with a six-foot Portland stone statue of Aphrodite in 1952 sparked outrage among those who deemed it an affront to good taste. Aphrodite quickly earned a new nickname: Bulbous Betty, a moniker that has stuck ever since.
