This is a contemporary, abstract rendering of the mythological birth of Aphrodite. The ancient Greek goddess of passionate love and stunning beauty is also known as Venus by the Romans. In Greek, the word "aphros" signifies "foam," and Hesiod describes in his Theogony that Aphrodite emerged from the white foam created when Cronus severed the genitals of Uranus (the Sky) and cast them into the ocean. This artwork depicts the moment when Aphrodite rises out of a shell onto the sandy beach of Cyprus, an island sacred to her worship.
