Aouk Underground River Cave - Waykut

The first expedition to Bird's Head peninsula (New Guinea) of Acheloos Geo Exploring kicked off in 2016 under the banner of a project called "Call for River." The materials available at the time hinted that one of the world's largest underground rivers was waiting to be discovered here. The entrance to the underground portion is called Waykut, a formidable portal (over 100 meters high) into the unknown. Local Mey Mare people are well aware of this passage and believe it serves as the starting point for deceased individuals embarking on their journey to the afterlife alongside the river's flow. According to legend, the roar of Aouk stream in the underground is a testament to the voices of ancestors past. Notably, Aouk Underground River boasts a size comparable to and even surpasses that of world-renowned cave rivers such as Khoun Xe Cave (Laos) and Gebihe system (China).
