Most of the quieter designs others have created either focus on a larger fan or isolated cooling specifically on the stepper controllers. I took a distinct approach to quieting and cooling my i3 MEGA-S by emulating how rack mount servers direct cool air over the electronic components and expel warm air out the back of the chassis. By doing so, the entire motherboard and components are supplied with fresh cool air. I replaced the factory fan with a GELID Silent 5 fan which provides ample airflow and is very quiet. Furthermore, I had to design a new aluminum case cover to allow for proper air inlet and exhaust. With all the quieting modifications I made, the total SPL is about 50-55db when printing. Currently, the linear bearings make the most annoying noise! I've uploaded pictures of my build and will upload the STL files for the printed components in the near future. I will also describe the other modifications I've done to reduce the noise as well as power supply/MOSFET cooling/quieting.
