Anubis Shrine

Anubis Shrine

myminifactory

This replica honors the legendary Anubis Shrine. The original sanctuary was a treasured part of Tutankhamun's (18th Dynasty, New Kingdom) grave offerings. Howard Carter uncovered the tomb almost entirely intact on November 4, 1922, in the Valley of the Kings within western Thebes. Anubis is the Greek name given to a deity deeply connected with mummification and the afterlife in ancient Egyptian faith, often depicted fully in his jackal form. Between the god's front legs was an inscribed tablet bearing the name of Akhenaten's eldest child, Meritaten, while some details on the wooden sculpture were rendered in gold and silver leaf, increasing its value significantly. It is probable that the entire shrine played a role in the funerary procession for the pharaoh before being placed within his tomb. The original and replica shrines are both displayed at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo.
