This marble bust, carved in 1819, was brought to life by French sculptor Nicolas-Augustin Matte (Paris, 1781 - Paris 1837), who captured the likeness of Flemish painter Antoon Van Dyck. The bust was commissioned to adorn the Painter rooms at the Louvre. Sir Anthony van Dyck (22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) made a name for himself as a leading court painter in England, having already achieved great success in Italy and Flanders. He is best known for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family, which he painted with a relaxed elegance that would go on to influence English portrait-painting for the next 150 years. Van Dyck also excelled at painting biblical and mythological subjects, displayed exceptional skill as a draughtsman, and was an innovator in watercolour and etching techniques.
