The Antonov An-124 Ruslan is a massive strategic airlift aircraft that was developed in the 1980s by the renowned Antonov design bureau in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. For thirty years, until the Boeing 747-8F came along, the An-124 held the title of world's heaviest production cargo airplane and second heaviest operating cargo aircraft, eclipsed only by the one-of-a-kind Antonov An-225 Mriya, a massive design that built on the An-124's framework. The An-124 remains the largest military transport plane in service today, a testament to its enduring design. Viktor Tolmachev led the team that designed the An-124 and the closely related An-225.
