Antoninus Pius, also known simply as Antoninus, took control of the Roman Empire in 138 CE, ruling until his death in 161 CE. As one of the esteemed Five Good Emperors within the Nerva-Antonine dynasty and Aurelii family line, he solidified a reputation for fairness and integrity during his reign. The name Pius was bestowed upon him following his ascension to power, reportedly either as a result of having convinced the Senate to deify his adoptive father, Hadrian, or due to his efforts in rescuing senators who had been condemned to death by Hadrian later on in life. Pius met his demise in 161 CE after falling victim to illness and was succeeded by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who went on to rule the empire jointly as co-emperors.
