Antoninus Pius (ruling from 138–61 A.D.) was born in southern Gaul with strong connections to wealthy provincial families and Italian aristocrats. His reign brought peace and prosperity, as the Senate granted him the esteemed title of Pius. Countless statues and portraits depicting Antoninus and his wife Faustina emerged throughout Rome and the provinces. With a thick beard and curly hair framing his face, Antoninus adopted Hadrian's (ruling from 117–38 A.D.) signature style, solidifying his familial bond to his predecessor and adoptive father.
