Antoninus Pius, born Titus Fulvus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius on September 19, 86 CE, ruled the Roman Empire with distinction from 138 to 161. As one of the illustrious Five Good Emperors in the Nerva-Antonine dynasty and the Aurelii line, he earned his nickname Pius upon ascending to power. Pius was either motivated by a desire to honor his adoptive father Hadrian or to save senators condemned to death by him in his later years. The emperor's reign came to an abrupt end on March 7, 161, when illness took its toll. He was succeeded by his adopted sons Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as co-rulers of the empire.
