The Nats are revered spirits in Myanmar who are closely tied to Buddhism. They fall into two main categories: the 37 Great Nats and all other Nats, including those associated with trees, water, and more. Most of the 37 Great Nats were human beings whose lives ended abruptly through violence (known as "green death"). As a result, they are also referred to as Nat Sein, or green spirits. Although "sein" typically means green, in this context it is used to signify raw. Myanmar's Buddhist faith recognizes two distinct types of Nats.
