Antinous as Bacchus
myminifactory
Hadrian's beloved, the youthful lover Antinous, is frequently depicted as the embodiment of wine and sensual pleasure, Bacchus or Dionysus, a god renowned for his wild abandon. In 130 AD, while traveling with Hadrian's imperial retinue in Egypt, Antinous tragically met his demise by drowning in the Nile River. Despite this untimely death, Hadrian saw fit to deify his lost love, commissioning numerous statues and temples throughout the empire to honor Antinous' memory.
