Anthropomorphic Sculpture, Potbelly
myminifactory
Potbellied sculptures, known as barrigones in Spanish, are intricately carved boulders depicting obese human figures in a dynamic three-dimensional form. They are a striking feature of the sculptural heritage in Mesoamerica's southern Maya region. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their precise purpose, it is evident that these sculptures played a central role in public reverence and rituals orchestrated by the ruling elite. Interestingly, this distinct sculptural tradition is exclusive to the southern Maya area, yet research has revealed that the sculptures themselves are not of Maya origin.
