Despite the lively character captured by Thomas Banks in this bust, it is based on a death mask. Dr. Addington (1713-1790), a renowned doctor specializing in mental illness treatment, had King George III as one of his patients. Henry Addington, who likely commissioned this portrait, later became Britain's Prime Minister. This is one of the few portrait busts executed by Banks, who typically specialized in funerary monuments and ideal sculpture. Thomas Banks (1735-1805) apprenticed with a London mason and also worked alongside sculptor Peter Scheemakers. He enrolled in life classes at St Martin's Lane Academy and later at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1772, he became the first sculptor to win the three-year travelling stipend from the Royal Academy and went with his wife to Rome, where he spent seven years. Banks specialized in ideal works, most of which were executed in Rome for British patrons, though he continued producing similar work after returning to London. He was made a Royal Academician in 1786. As one of Britain's most original Neo-classical sculptors, Banks dedicated his work to the antique spirit rather than just fashionable classical style. He attempted to establish a market for modern gallery sculpture, which was unusual for patrons at the time who preferred restored antique marbles, replicas, pastiches, busts, and memorials.
