Ant Formicarium

Ant Formicarium

I designed an ant formicarium based on the Antkit series, and I also created a cover for my current size 2 formicarium that you can see in the pictures. To cut the acrylic sheet to size, I used scissors. For the hole that lets water through, I employed a hot needle and kept piercing the acrylic until I got a hole. Then, I just widened it with another puncture. It's very easy, but be cautious not to leave the needle in the glass too long or it will cool down, and the acrylic will mold around the needle. Currently, I'm keeping two colonies: a 2-queen Myrmica rubra colony with approximately 30 workers, and a Messor barbarus colony of over 120+ workers. Both colonies love their formicariums and the water bars seem particularly useful for the Messor colony. I've noticed that they place seeds next to the water before chewing them to soften them up.
