These cups work incredibly well, but the oil seems to soak deeply into the plastic. To retain the oil, I have since sealed the cups using a Flex Spray. This ant barrier is designed specifically for my 2x4 wood hive stand. Based on de37421's ant barrier design, I created this version with several improvements. The lower part of the barrier holds mineral or vegetable oil, which is perfect for keeping ants out. All gaps in the design are precisely 1/2 inches wide. When ants try to climb up the oil cup, they're confronted with a 1/2-inch-wide pool of oil that blocks their path. Since ants can't cross the oil, they're unable to enter the hive. The cover has two mounting options: inline and perpendicular to the 2x4. Additionally, I've included slots on each cover for securing hold-down straps. To avoid attracting bees, this ant barrier should be printed in black. The central holes are designed to fit a 2 1/2-inch-long deck screw perfectly.
