The Ansaldo A.1 "Balilla" was a single-seat exploration and combat biplane, named after "Balilla" a Genoese folk hero. The A.1 was the only aircraft produced in Italy during the First World War. A Polish army commission traveled post-war to Italy to purchase new armament, taking 10 of these aircraft for their ranks , the Polish pilots received them with great acclaim. They fought as part of the renewed Kosciuszko Squadron during the Russo-Polish War of 1920. The following year, Ansaldo delivered 30 units to the Soviets. Latvia ordered 13 units, although the aircraft crashed during the demonstration flight. Other countries also operated the A-1, such as Brazil, Mexico and Holland.
