A team led by American paleontologist Barnum Brown found a specimen in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana in 1906, with the first discovery made by collector Peter Kaisen. • How big was it and what was its appearance? Its head was covered with an additional layer of bone plates and spines; the back and tail had bony shields and fused vertebrae at the end of the tail. It could reach up to nine meters in length and weigh around six tons. • How long did it live? It lived on Earth 60 million years ago, during the Upper Cretaceous period, in North America. • What did it eat? The Ankylosaurus used its sharp beak also to dig and obtain small nutritious roots. The abundant plants were conifers, ferns, and cicadas. Its larger, more proportionate teeth are actually its smallest.
