In search of the perfect RostockMAX hot-end fan duct/shroud, I found Thingiverse's 43983 model nearly satisfied my needs, but it didn't fit due to my SeeMeCNC v2 nozzle. To design a custom duct, I learned new ProE surface modeling techniques and created one with a simple mount that securely attaches to the stock effector without interferences. After 100 hours of printing, no heat-induced deformation occurred. Testing one duct improved print performance, but two ducts with two 40mm fans provided better cooling, although adding a third might increase effector weight. My RostockMAX later underwent further modifications to magnetic arms, rendering the ducts as decorations. A printable version of the custom duct requires 3 perimeter prints on the mount with 60% infill and 1 perimeter on the duct, both at 0.2mm layer height with a 0.5mm nozzle. M3 or #6 screws can be used, and it's advised to tap the fan mounting holes for stress prevention. Additionally, using a thin piece of neoprene or light-weight foam rubber as a gasket between the fan and duct can help absorb vibrations, reducing the risk of missed steps in steppers.
