Cerveteri's Most Famous Attraction: Necropolis of the Banditaccia The Necropoli della Banditaccia stands out as Cerveteri's most prized sight, earning UNESCO World Heritage Site status alongside Tarquinia's necropolis. Spanning 400 hectares (990 acres), only 10 hectares (25 acres) are open to visitors, featuring approximately 1,000 tombs nestled in distinctive mounds. It holds the title of largest ancient Mediterranean necropolis. The name Banditaccia originates from local landowners leasing areas of land to Cerveteri residents through a public declaration (bando). The tombs range from the Villanovan culture's 9th century BC to the Etruscan period's later stages (third century BC). Early tombs resemble pits, housing ashes, while simple potholes are also present.
