The ring-shaped frame of this brooch is common to both brooches and buckles discovered in the late 1200s to 1400s. These annular designs functioned as brooches at the necks of garments or as buckles to secure hose and breeches. This brooch was unearthed during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989 and 1991. For information on visiting Edinburgh Castle, see our website.
