This replica of a masterpiece by Paolo Naldini (Rome, 1614-1691) is crafted to adorn the monument designed by Carlo Maratta in tribute to the painter Annibale Carracci. Before arriving at The Louvre, the bust and its counterpart were showcased at the Chateau de Meudon in 1722. Annibale Carracci was an Italian Baroque artist who worked alongside his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico Carracci in their shared studio, "The Academy of the Desiderosi" (those driven by a desire for fame and knowledge), later renamed the Incamminati (progressives; those who pave new paths). Carracci was widely praised for his ability to evolve from the Caravaggisti style that dominated the art world, where painters were urged to depict the Platonic ideal of beauty as exemplified by Caravaggio. His works can now be found worldwide, with the Palazzo Farnese's frescoes being among his most renowned creations.
