Anne Frank was a German-born writer who became one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Her wartime diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, has been the basis for several plays and films that have captured her story. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands. As a German national, she lost her citizenship in 1941 and became stateless. After her death, her diary gained international fame when it was published posthumously. The diary documents her experiences hiding from the German occupation during World War II. In 1933, Anne's family moved to Amsterdam from Germany after the Nazis took control of their homeland. By May 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions increased against the Jewish population in July 1942, Anne and her family went into hiding behind a bookcase in the building where her father worked. In August 1944, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne Frank and her sister Margot were eventually transferred to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died of typhus in February or March 1945, just weeks before the camp's liberation in April. After the war, Anne's father Otto returned to Amsterdam and discovered that his daughter's diary had been saved by one of their helpers, Miep Gies. His efforts led to its publication in 1947, which has since been translated into many languages. The diary was first given to Anne on her thirteenth birthday and chronicles her life from June 12, 1942, until August 1, 1944. This statue is strategically situated as it marks one of the places where Anne lived in hiding. Today, this location has become a museum that honors her memory.
