In Dalarö harbour, near Stockholm, lies the wreck of the flute ship Anna Maria at a depth of 21 meters. A flute was a sturdy Dutch merchant vessel capable of hauling heavy cargo. The ship was constructed in 1694 and named after the wife of one of its co-owners. It has had an eventful history and once managed to evade a pirate attack in the Mediterranean. During the winter of 1708-1709, Anna Maria became ice-locked in Dalarö. A small crew remained on board while they spent a night at the local pub, enjoying drinks. Suddenly, they heard shouts coming from the harbour - Anna Maria was ablaze! The galley fire had reignited and spread to the stern, causing most of it to burn down to the waterline. As the ship took on water, it sank through the ice with a loud crackling sound. Parts of the ship were severely damaged in the fire, but much remains intact of its 38-meter-long and 8-meter-wide hull, along with remnants of its cargo consisting mainly of pine planks.
