This week's Design Challenge was sparked by the Challenge card: "Story time - Create a one-of-a-kind bookmark for someone special or a beloved book." The challenge came with constraints: Tween, evening, and "The Netherlands". Personally, I'm not a fan of bookmarks, so connecting to the challenge was a bit tough. Then I started researching "The Netherlands" to find a Dutch literary concept - a famous writer, a famous book, etc. On the link above, from a list of 10 best books set in Amsterdam, I discovered number 10: "The Diary of Anne Frank". As a Jew, although I'm not typically sentimental, I thought that might be a cue for connection. The other two constraints coincided at the same time - Anne was a tween when she wrote her diary, and her life was a never-ending evening as she hid from the Nazis. I designed the bookmark for Anne Frank as if sending items back in time were possible. This bookmark has three functions beyond its purpose as a bookmark. It can hold a pencil, which Anne needed to write her diary, and it holds a small flashlight on an arm that extends from the base of the bookmark and clips above the book or diary. I'm aware that the flashlight part isn't realistic for Anne's time period, but so is designing a bookmark for someone who was murdered over 70 years ago. At the back of the bookmark, I embedded Anne Frank's original signature, which I found on Wikipedia.
