A herringbone gear is used to transmit power between parallel shafts. It was developed to overcome the lack of high-end thrust found in single-helix gears. If there are gears on both arms of a gear, the thrust of one set cancels the thrust of the other. Thus, another advantage of this type of gearbox is quiet and smooth operation at higher speeds. In the axial direction, the load on the bearings decreases.
