I have a treasure trove of designs that never quite make it to this platform despite being absolute showstoppers. So, let's take a look at this beauty! This one is currently rising majestically halfway up on my custom modded Rostock in full size. Don't let its solid appearance fool you – solids actually produce surfaces that are far superior to those of pre-shelled objects. By setting single perimeter mode, vase mode, no fill, and a few bottom layers, I can achieve the smoothest and most accurate skin imaginable. Here's how I created this masterpiece: I have a custom OpenSCAD script that I wrote and tweaked for the overall tube skin shape with some sine waves woven in to the height and angle. The bird-like tiling effect is converted to a pseudo-grey scale, then to a height map. This height map is then repeated around and up the modulated cylinder. After an OpenSCAD render, the resulting STL file is massive due to all the intricate height map detailing, so I run it through MeshCape to simplify the skin. This process also has a subtle smoothing effect, similar to how paint forms a skin as it dries, like surface tension. I save the resulting Mescape file and load it into Slic3r with vase settings (1 perimeter, 3 base layers, no fill, vase mode). To make the container even more robust, I set a fatter nozzle size in the printer extruder settings so that the plastic squidges out sideways as well as just down.
