Angela Merkel, born July 17, 1954, is Germany's Chancellor since 2005. She led the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 2000 to 2018. A prominent global figure, she has been called the EU's de facto leader and one of the world's most powerful women. Born in Hamburg, West Germany, Merkel moved as an infant to East Germany with her clergyman father. She earned a doctorate in quantum chemistry in 1986 before entering politics post-1989 Revolutions. Serving under Lothar de Maiziere's government, she was elected to the Bundestag for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern after reunification. Under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Merkel served as Federal Minister for Women and Youth in 1991, and for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety in 1994. After the party's 1998 loss, she became CDU's Secretary-General and its first female leader in 2000 following a scandal that ousted Wolfgang Schäuble.
