To get a better view of what's happening below the nozzle, I purchased a set of LED strips. Since the exact "zero" level of each setup may vary, I designed the .scad file to include a parameter for height. The height is measured from the rig to the top edge of the led-strip - in my case, it's 63mm. I made sure to make it high enough so that the LEDs can illuminate the bed, but low enough that it doesn't collide with the z-mounting while leveling.
