Andromeda and the Sea Monster

This sculpture brings to life the legendary tale of Andromeda and the ferocious sea monster. The mythical scene is that of a princess in Greek lore, Andromeda, daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, who ruled over the land of Aethiopia, which encompassed the Upper Nile region and areas south of the Sahara desert. Her mother's boasts that Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids, daughters of Nereus and Doris, companions to Poseidon, enraged him and led to his decision to unleash a monstrous sea creature, Cetus, upon Aethiopia. In desperation, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia consulted an oracle, who instructed them to bind Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice to the beast. Meanwhile, hero Perseus was in the vicinity and learned of Andromeda's impending doom; as the sea monster emerged from the depths, he bravely slew it with his knife or used Medusa's head to petrify it, thus saving Andromeda from her fate. Perseus and Andromeda then fell deeply in love and traveled together back to Greece.
