Sculptor responsible for this magnificent sculpture is a mystery.\r\nIn ancient Greek mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of Aethiopian King Cepheus and his queen Cassiopeia. When Cassiopeia's pride gets the better of her, boasting that Andromeda outshines the Nereids, Poseidon unleashes a sea monster, Cetus, to ravage Aethiopia as divine retribution. Andromeda is stripped naked and chained to a rock as a sacrifice to satiate the beast, but Perseus intervenes just in time to save her from certain death.\r\nHer name is derived from the Greek words "ruler of men," with "man" coming from anēr, andrós, and "ruler" from medon. As a subject, Andromeda has been a popular theme in art since classical times; she's one of several Greek myths featuring a hero rescuing a maiden intended for a sacred marriage, giving rise to the classic princess and dragon motif. From the Renaissance onwards, interest has revived in the original story, often as told by Ovid.
