Andon (行灯) - traditional Japanese lamp
thingiverse
A unique lamp styled after traditional Japanese andon lights has been created using 3D printing technology. The design file provided allows users to modify the light bulb socket for different options. More images and information about this project can be found on a personal blog. The dimensions of the lamp are 285mm in length, 200mm in width, and 200mm in height, making it suitable for printing on a standard 200mm x 200mm bed. To accommodate the print bed size, simply rotate the long vertical members by 45 degrees. To assemble the lamp, users will need to print two base.stl files, four column.stl files, twenty-two spar.stl files, one maincolumn.stl file, and two key.stl files to connect the parts. Optionally, two frame.stl files can be printed for mounting a picture or optically diffusive fabric. The columns are connected to the base using tapered dovetail joints, while the spars are inserted into slots but do not provide structural support. Glue is recommended for attaching the main column to the base via the key joint. For optimal results, use ABS or PETG materials for the key.stl and main post to prevent softening due to heat from the bulb. It is also advisable not to leave the lamp unattended for extended periods of time. Printer Settings: Printer: Monoprice Maker Select (V1) Rafts: No Supports: No Notes: The user scaled their print down to 96% in the slicer, allowing for a brim to prevent warping and provide extra margin against skipped steps. Be cautious not to pry the brim away from the rest of the part as it may peel the first layer. Post-Printing: The lamp was printed with multiple perimeters for strength, then sanded and stained to enhance its appearance. If using wood-filament, sanding and staining will reveal a more natural surface finish. Additionally, refining the fit between joints can minimize gaps on the exterior.
