Six high-quality models of the traditional Japanese lamp, andon, are featured in this collection. The andon, made from paper stretched over a frame of bamboo, wood or metal, dates back to the Edo period when it was initially handheld before being placed on stands or hung on walls for light. Burning oil in a stone or ceramic holder with a cotton wick provided illumination; rapeseed oil was popular while candles were used earlier but became less common due to their higher prices. Sardine oil was an affordable alternative. The okiandon, with many versions featuring vertical box shapes and drawers for refilling, was commonly found indoors. Another variation is the Enshū andon, attributed to Kobori Enshu of the Azuchi-Momoyama Period and early Edo period, which has a tubular shape with an opening instead of a drawer. The Ariake andon serves as a bedside lamp, while the kakeandon hangs under shop eaves bearing merchants' names. The term "hiru andon," or daytime lamp, is used to describe someone or something seemingly without purpose, often applied to Oishi Yoshio in dramatizations of the forty-seven ronin story. Two cochin lanterns are also included in this set.
