Locality: Romania Size: Thirteen centimeters by eight centimeters by six centimeters Type: Volcanic rock formed from molten lava that has cooled and solidified quickly on the Earth's surface Description: This type of rock is made up of tiny crystals that are too small to see with the naked eye, giving it a smooth, glassy appearance. Its composition is similar to diorite, consisting mainly of plagioclase minerals and one or more mafic minerals such as hornblende, biotite, or pyroxene. Many examples of this rock have feldspar and mafic crystals that are visible to the eye. It can be found in a range of colors including brown, reddish, gray, or greenish, but is rarely black. It has a higher concentration of silica than basalt and less than dacite. The name "andesite" was given to this type of rock by Buch in 1826, after the Andes Mountains in South America where it was first discovered. Essential minerals: plagioclase, hornblende, biotite, and pyroxene Accessory minerals: magnetite, ilmenite, etc. Website: http://geology.uaic.ro/muzee/mineralogie/ Concept & 3D-modelling by dr.
