A preserved corpse is a deceased person or animal whose skin and organs have been stabilized through exposure to potent chemicals, freezing temperatures, extremely low humidity levels, or the absence of oxygen, so that the recovered body remains intact if stored in a cool, dry environment. Some experts limit the term's application to bodies intentionally treated with embalming agents, but the use of this word to describe accidentally desiccated corpses dates back to at least 1615 AD.
