Castles, originating in the 9th and 10th centuries after the division of the Carolingian Empire, were fortified structures built by European nobility and royalty. Serving both as military bases and administrative centres, castles took various forms over their approximately 900-year lifespan, with features like curtain walls and arrowslits commonplace. Initially constructed from earth and timber, they were later reinforced with stone. The late 12th and early 13th centuries saw a shift in castle defence strategies, marked by the proliferation of polygonal castles, concentric defences, and flanking fire from towers. Gunpowder's introduction in the 14th century led to new defensive techniques, eventually causing a decline in true castles and their replacement with indefensible country houses and artillery forts. The romantic revival of Gothic architecture from the 18th century onwards spurred the construction of mock castles devoid of military purpose. [Wiki]
