Humans craft anchors from metal, typically, to keep vessels tethered to the ocean floor, safeguarding against wind-driven and current-driven drift. The term "anchor" originates from Latin's ancora, which itself was borrowed from Greek's ἄγκϕὸ (ankura).[3][4] Anchors come in two forms: temporary and permanent. Permanent anchors are used to establish a mooring, often remaining stationary for extended periods; specialists usually handle their relocation or maintenance. Boats carry one or multiple temporary anchors, each with varying designs and weights. A sea anchor serves as a drag device that doesn't touch the seafloor, minimizing drift relative to water currents. A drogue acts as a drag device to slow down or steer a vessel navigating through stormy seas in a following or overtaking wave, or while crossing a breaking bar in the ocean.
