The colon, approximately six feet in length, functions as part of the body's digestive system to transport waste materials from the small intestine to the rectum. The small intestine extracts nutrients from consumed food and then deposits leftover residue into the cecum. This sludge subsequently moves to the colon for additional processing. Following the stomach, the small intestine is a key component of the gastrointestinal tract (gut), where the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption occur. The appendix or cecal appendage secretes antibodies into the gut, contributing to the body's immune system functions.
