Anatomical Heart
myminifactory
This is one of a select group of intricate anatomical models that the Museum acquired from H B Selby & Co in 1919 and 1920. Some display the logo of Japanese company Shimadzu, while others remain unmarked but were likely crafted in Japan. They contribute to our understanding of Japan's industrial progress, Selby's growth as a supplier of scientific goods to Australia, and the ongoing practice of creating models of human body parts for educational purposes. One of ten Museum artifacts scanned in 3D was included in Hack the Collection, a public program held during the 2014 Sydney Design Festival. This event brought together ten contemporary Sydney designers with ten objects from the Museum's collection. Designers spent two intense days working in the Festival FabLab, creatively manipulating the 3D object files to create their own hacked interpretations on full display for an enthusiastic crowd. At the conclusion of the weekend, the designers' remixed objects were 3D printed using MakerBots and displayed alongside their original counterparts. We view our collection as a treasure trove of creative resources waiting to be tapped. We invite you to download and remix our collection, taking it in new and exciting directions. We'd love to hear about the innovative forms and uses you discover for our objects – share your work with us!
