The skin is a vital organ that covers the entire outer surface of the body, it's the heaviest and largest organ in the body. The total weight of the skin accounts for about 16% of the body weight, approximately 2.7 to 3.6 kilograms in adults, and its surface area measures around 1.5 to 1.9 square meters. The thickness of the skin varies greatly depending on location, age, and gender, ranging from 0.5 millimeters to a maximum of 6 millimeters. Thin skin is found on eyelids, the penis, labia minora, and the medial upper arm area, whereas thicker skin covers palms, soles, back, shoulders, and buttocks. From an embryological standpoint, skin originates from two distinct layers: the outer layer, epidermis, which consists of epithelial cells derived from ectoderm, and the inner layer, dermis or corium, a type of connective tissue derived from mesoderm.
